Many years ago I read a short scifi story -- I need to locate it for some research I am doing. Here is what I remember about it:

-The story is about a future where people live alone in underground locked apartments and do all of their interactions using a screen. The only exception is procreation to maintain the population which is organized by the government.

-I believe it was written late 19th century or early 20th century.

-I think it was part of the GCSE (then GCE) O-level English literature reading list in the mid eighties.

I know this is not much to go on -- I appreciate any help.

Is it the classic E.M. Forster story 'The Machine Stops'?
