I just started The Subtle Knife and was wondering what popular opinion was on this set of books. I am enjoying it but I think it was written for a young audience, I would guess it was written for young teenagers. Mind you, I have no problem reading childrens books, some of my favorites are considered childrens books. I was just curious.

I know that there has been a discussion about this series before, but it might be buried in the archives by now. From what I recall this was yet another polarizing issue. Some loved it (like myself), but it seemed that more disliked it or were ambivilant to it.

I loved these books. I thought Pullman's character's were awesome, his concepts and cultures (daemons and the armored Bears particularly) were great, and I liked his writing style, even though I'm not in the "intended Age group." It never bothered me that it was a young adult book, nor have any others like harry potter, because in my eyes, a good book is a good book, intended audience aside. My only complaint with the series was that, after thoroughly enjoying the first two, I was a bit disappointed in the last installment, but even so, I thought these were great.

I personally thought it was a fantastic series. As you get through each book, they do get more mature in tone. They are aimed primarily at a teen audience, I think, but there is a lot of good stuff in there that a more mature reader will appreciate as well.

I am currentlyhalfway through the Amber Spyglass and enjoying this series. It is definitely written for young adults, but I don't mind as I find the concepts of the books pretty interesting. Lyra is starting to get a bit annoying though - I think if she had been the main focus of The Subtle Knife and not Will I would be over her by now

These books were some of the few I've read where afterwards I wanted to run down the street grabbing random strangers and shouting, "you must read this!".
I can't remember the last time I've read anything where I genuinely felt the main characters could be brutally killed off at anytime; that's how ruthlessly gripping the pace was. Although the main characters are kids, the themes are hardcore enough to be enjoyed by all ages. The scale and ambition are breathtaking, and I really could not tell what was coming next.
So, yes, I liked them.
