I recently read most of the ORIGINAL Conan stories written by Robert E. Howard and thought they were pretty good. I can see how influential the character and storytelling is in today's fantasies.
As for the character, I like him. If I didn't I wouldn't have read all of the stories I did.

Well,I can't say "I like" or "dislike" Conan, because "original" Conan is different than RJ's Conan. But I don't think that he is the best 'swords and sorcery' character.I prefer Fafrd and Grey Mouser, and Hawkmoon. Also,I think that the best 's&s'authors don't write Conan-stories-
Moorcock,Leiber etc.But infact I don't like
"Swords&Sorcery",I prefer the traditional fantasy[look my topic-"the good old days".

Let me take that further... the only Conan books are the Howard books... the rest is just a poor copy.

I agree with you, Dennizm. Only Howard can write Conan.
Now -little Jordy writing Conan??!!!
I don't even dare touch those books!

I have considered reading Jordan's take on Conan since I enjoy WOT. I have seen VERY mixed opinions on it. Maybe eventually, I'll pick them up.
L. Sprague DeCamp was supposedly a pretty good writer of the Conan tales. Another Conan movie is in the works based on one of his Conan stories: Conan of the Isles

I read the Conan Chronicles 2 edited by de Camp and Carter when I was 14 and have loved them ever since http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I picked up one Jordan Conan book 'Conan the Triumphant' a year or so ago but while I didn't hate it, it didn't really do anything for me. Seems to lack the same magic or something.
I am looking forward to getting around to the new Millennium Fantasy Masterworks Conan volumes, which are the Howard versions as close to their original form as possible -apparently-.

FF... I stand corrected, the De Camp are very good, in fact I find very little difference with Howard in this case... I have read Jordan's 'attempt', and was not very impressed.
RA... for what it is worth, I think the casting of Arnie as Conan was inspired
