As writers, we get our inspiration from all around us. After reading this (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/05/AR2007050501009_pf.html) today, I remembered a discussion we had recently in this forum about the nature of machines as characters.

So I'm proposing a Battle Robot Flash Fiction Writing Contest. You are to write an original story 1000 words or less and post it in the community, then link it to this thread. In the Summary, please note this is part of the Battle Robot Flash Fiction contest.

This contest is opened to all registered members of SFFWorld forums.
Prizes: None except for that warm feeling you get.
Costs: None except whatever it cost you to get on the internet.

Deadline: All entries are to be in by 12:01 AM GMT on Thursday, May 17th. (7:01 PM EDT Wednesday, May 16th)

A voting thread will be opened after the deadline for all the participating stories.

For those of you who need more inspiration, try the Tachikoma Kamikazi song video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UEkrUVmPIc) from Ghost in the Shell 2nd GIG where AI battle tanks (tachikomas) take out a nuclear missle by purposefully crashing the satellite their computer brains are kept (and some other satellites too) into it.

Fascinating article, Expy. I might just have to try my hand at your little contest. This could lead to some interesting material.

The article made my computer freeze. (Actually I think it had more to do with a security program.) But I have an idea, even if I'm not on the same page with everyone else. (Used to it.) I just have to try it out and see if it works.

For now count me as a maybe, probably or something.

I may have streched the definition of "battle robot" a bit. :cool:

It seems I may have stretched the definition a bit myself.:rolleyes:

Well, foo. I missed the deadline. So it goes. I'd promised the, what, three readers of my site I'd have two new chapters up yesterday. That isn't to say I wouldn't've had the time if I goofed off less. Not that I had any real ideas for the project to begin with...

Anyway, now I can read the entries without fear of coloring the non-existant ideas for my non-existant entry.

Dawnstorm, I have to ask. What exactly is a UN Peace Corpse? Is that like a zombie that only gums you after three weeks of deliberation? Also, why do I get the feeling that Cassy is the object of some really creepy fetishes?

B5, slick story, but didn't you mean the Chief of Staff? Awesome regardless.

Lastly, Expendable, I don't think Sarge will let Sampson keep it. I'm sure there's an SOP against it or something. Shoot, in garrison the most my unit allowed was a goldfish. I don't think they're more generous on deployment. ^_^;

Good show, one and all. Now I just need to kick back until it's time to cast my vote.

Yikes, I thought I had caught them all. I mean they just shamble anyway. Until you take their "e" from them. Then they turn around and glare at you and make you feel like apologising to your sister.

Also, why do I get the feeling that Cassy is the object of some really creepy fetishes?

Not only Cassy, I asssure you. :cool:

Shambling NGO volunteers are quite enough to make me apologize to my sister. I don't need the piercing glare that comes with the righteous rage of a shambler who's been divested of his precious silent vowel. But that's just me. ^_^;
