Synopsis
These two novellas tell the story of how Locke, Jean and the other gentleman bastards acquired the Austershalin brandy that played such a key role in the con at the centre of THE LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA and how they managed to avoid being killed by the elite assassins known as the Choir of Knives. These two novellas will fill in the backstory of the Bastards and allow fans to revisit the pleasures of the banter and antics of Caldo, Galdo and Bug as well discover how Locke and Jean forged their gang. They will also serve as an excellent introduction to Locke and his world for new readers. And because these are novellas by Scott Lynch they will also provide 100,000 words full of devious con-work, high adventure, razor sharp dialogue and rich atmopshere.

I must say Lynch is really writing very fast. His third novel
(Republic of Thieves) is also published in 2008. But I think it's good news a succesful big fantasy author is finding time to write shorter fiction. And I really like long novellas so this one looks like great fun !

Wasn't the Austershalin brandy either a fake or a less rare date but no one would be able to tell the difference (been a while since I read the book)? Doesn't sound like a very exciting story...
But more Locke is still good! :)

The Austershalin brandy is the real ****, that's why there is going to be a whole book about it. Get it, got it, good!

There were 2 brandy kegs:
One was a bona fide rare vintage, won by cheating an eccentric merchant during a card game.

The other was faked. The claim was that it represented the current year's distillation, something unobtainable, since the casks were aged 7 years before being commercially available. Lock took some respectable Aus. brandy and mixed it with cheap rum to give it an unaged quality.

Sweet - I wonder if these are the titles that Subterranean Press has been planning on publishing? They might be published their first.

I like how these are coming out as an omnibus and at the same time as Republic of Thieves, that's really something to look forward to.

Let me tell you, any new works by Scott Lynch will be a welcome addition to my library.

I really get the impression that Lynch would be the perfect person to write in the short(ish) story format. He did such a great job in The Lies of Locke Lamora and created a little mini short-story in each chapter, as well as the flashbacks following the main storyline, that I imagine he'd rock at writing true short stories.

All the better if they show us a little more of who Locke and his friends are!
