Anyone who has read all or some of his Saga of Recluse books, let me know in which order you read them and how he measures up the greats!

I actually read them in the order of publication, and I must say I did not really have much of a problem with that, even though some of the later books described things that happened before the first book, there is a website that gives the books in chronological order... I can't remember the URL at the moment, but typing 'Modesitt' into Yahoo! will bring the site near to the top of the search.

Is he one of the greats?... Hmmm... No, he is not, but he is very good. He tends to ramble, very over-detailed, and very slow to get to the action, like the last chapter!!! But, the contend is very good.

One thing I found that really bugged me, was the soundFX, creaaaaaaaakk, the door opened, and... clump clump, went his footsteps... in fact, practically every page is peppered with italics, giving sound FX

I agree, the sound effects really started to get to me towards the end of Magic of recluse, i was just reading the towers of the sunset and i wondered weather or not the rest of the series was worth reading. The first one was great, but should i just consider it a good book and find something else, or does reading the whole series, sound effects and all, worth it??

I can only really speak for myself, but I think the books are worth reading, underneath all that noise http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif, and all that detail is a good story. Just don't expect fast paced action, read David Farland for that.

Again, I only speak for myself, but avoid his other work, The Soprano Sorceress at all cost... it is drivel... IMHO.

I had a chance to finish towers of the sunset this weekend and i can honestly say that, although confusing, i really liked reading about Creslin and Magaera. So far the 1st two books have been really good so i think ill finish off the series.Thanx for the input.

I think Modesitt builds a solid culture. His rules are well thought out. As stated by a previous poster, his are not fast paced books. They can be put down and picked up later. They are thoughtful books. I have been following the Order and Chaos series for a few years now and enjoy them.
