I am looking for the title and author of a short story I read some years ago. It is a first contact story, where humanity has just begun to explore the galaxy and has stopped on a planet and encountered a group of aliens, the humans ask why the planets they've stopped at before have had no life on them and the aliens tell a story of a race that developed xenophobic attitudes and went on a rampage, being stopped only when an alliance of other races beat them back to their home planet and destroyed their civilisation, reducing them to the stone age. The aliens go on to say that their races have maintained a watch ever since. The humans ask where they can sign up but the aliens end up killing them before the humans realise that they are the xenophobic race in question.

Any help in identifying this story would be greatly appreciated

I think this is part of Mike Resnick's 'Birthright: The Book of Man" - wikilink (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthright:_The_Book_of_Man).
Or possibly Barry B. Longyear's 'Manifest Destiny'.

Sounds like "All the way back", by Michael Shaara.
