So!
Who likes Heroic Fantasy (Conan, Kull, Druss, Elric, etc) and who doesn't?
And why! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well,I prefer the "Superfantasy"[Riftwar,LotR,WoT],but I like this type too, esspecially "Hawkmoon" by Moorcock and "Swords and Sorcery" by Fritz Leiber. It is pretty nice genre.

Most of the Heroic Fantasy I've read seems to be pretty simple, and straight forward, not that I have an enormous experience of this genre(or sub-genre).

I prefer my fantasy to have more scope, more emotion, I prefer the characters to be able to use their brains rather than their muscles all the time.

I will read heroic if I am tired and don't want something that will challenge me or enables me not to have to guess what will happen next etc.

Yeah... In Heroic Fantasy heroes slay armies, but have you ever thought that in Epic Fantasy heroes save the world everyday? You think that is "true" writing, while the other is "childish"? Beg me to differ! Even real "heroes" do not save the world, but only their hides -like Conan, Grey Mouser, Elric.
I like both sub-genres, and I think each one has something to offer in fantasy. Seldom do I criticize something as "childish".
Also note that in Heroic Fantasy it's not necesary for the hero(s) to be muscled barbarian(s); they can very well be puzle-solving characters (see Tanith Leeth's stories -hope I got her name right).

Both sub-genres have bad and good examples.
It all depends on the author.

I've probably mentioned before around here that I am a big, big fan of this sorta stuff.

If I wanted to be challenged when I read I'd pick up an ASP or SQL book. I'm overly emotional and problem fraught in real life as it is, so I don't want a load of babbling about problems. I just want a good, fantasy read that gets me out of real life and into a land where honour, valour, wine and women are widely admired, and Conan and his crew do it perfectly.

Am I the no-brainer reader of the fantasy world? Maybe. But I love it. Oh to live by the sword and have a simple life. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Now you have me laughing at myself http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Heh, i like internet boards where people don't recognize the names of programming languages instead of immediatly jumping into boring discussions about "the best SQL client for LINUX" or something as boring.
