Lets get a topic ive always felt strongly for. Descriptive sex in fantasy. Should people like martin tone it down a little bit, or does an author have a right to describe anything he thinks will add to the story? Lemme know what ya think??? And lets try and keep it civil!!?

Of coarse it is up to the author on how far he/she thinks sex in their novels should go.

I would say however that there is only really a place for graphic sex if it furthers the storyline. There has to be a reason for it being there, I believe that GRRM uses sex to enhance the story line, which is cool with me.

i agree completly, some people wont read a book because its too graphic, What do they wnat, a book to say, "THEY HAD SEX", just to get it over with?? I found martins writings to be very tasteful, and anyone who wont read it because of the sex is missing out.

>SPOILER ASOIAF<

I think martin does a very respectful job with his sexual description, especially the Cersei/Jaime thing where he doesn't just make them bonk each other to shock the audience. He tries to describe both of their own feelings and justifications of why they are doing it.

I hate it.

I don't like it either. I read fantasy for adventure, derring-do, fantastic worlds etc, not to read descriptively about sex.

It's not that I mind the sex being there, and of course it is often part of the plot because humans (and presumably other races) are sexual creatures by our very nature. I just don't get anything out of a description of other people having sex, so I feel it gets in the way of my reading.

I completely agree with you, Aleya and Allanon. I couldn't have said it any better myself. Well, I've already stated my opinions on this many times anyway, so I won't get started again. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Moderation in everything -including sex.

Depends on the story. I don't feel sex is needed in every story. If it is to be used, I want the description to be realistic and non-adolescent. So many people dwell on relationships TOO much in modern fantasy--it's like every movie has to have a love interest. When i read fantasy it's for the joy of visiting other worlds, facing supernatural beings etc. If sex takes places in the natural course of the story, well and good, but no big deal if it doesn't...

Real life has sex in it, stories with sex are more realistic, knights in shining armors can save princesses, but they have sex too, they are humans.
How descriptive the author should be? that's totally depends on him, if he is too descriptive he might lose readers... but that's a pure business decision.
