Hi all,
Just started reading Wizardborn, the third book of Farland's Runelords series, and I think it is great. Farland is a relatively new author and I would have never started the series if it weren't for pure chance picking up Runelords in the library last year. While this series is not the most talked about it is certainly worthwhile reading. Also, for you Jordan critics out there who whine that his series is drawn-out and not much happens, Farland is the author for you. His books are fast paced and exciting. Just wanted to put this out there, and enlighten those that haven't yet heard of this guy. Also, anyone have any thoughts, comments, or opinions about the story or the author? I'd be interested to hear what you have to say.

I think there are several of us on this board who really enjoyed Farland's Runelord novels.
Action-packed, and with great characters and one of the more origianl magic systems that I've read about lately; I can hardly ask for more in a book.

I just started reading the 1st book of the Runelords. I have read 80 pages, and its pretty good, and interesting!
Sometimes -at least where I read now- it's a bit boring, when, eg, the author discribes every tree in the city. But this is only because you want so desparetly to find out what happens next! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif
I think I'll read this book very fast!!
About the rune-magic. I didn't find it so original; it has been used before, many times, in rpgs. But I have never seen it in a fantasy book, so it's interesting.

I read 2 books of The Runelords so far, it's a good series, very original and it has fast action and of course great magic system.
The bad points are:i didn't like the characters enough, not one character that i could say "cool, this one i want to win".
Too much philosophical mumbo jumbo, those charts that detail the person and his relationship with his surroundings (as far as i remember) pretty boring and not needed.
The numbers of the armies were too big, hundreds of thousands marching from place to place without any realy support or preperations.. i admit that i don't like too much details, i usually don't care how they feed armies or how they arm the armies, but here it seemed a little too unrealistc.
Still, i will continue reading this series until the last book.

Fitz, it's no ureasonable to have 100 of thousand troops in "old times". But what hit me bad in the begging of the Runelords is that suddenly all of that Raj Atahs (or what's his name) troops appeared in a kingdom so far from his own. How the hell did he move them so far?! (If you see the map, you figure that he would have to cross other kingdoms.) Of course, I haven't read the book yet, so... I'll see if Farland explains it or not. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

Runelords is a magnificent series. I posted in the "Exceed expectations" about the first book, I didn't expect much.
After just finishing Wizardborn, I will say that the series is in the top of the crop of 'unfinished fantasy series'--i.e. agonizingly waiting for next book.
One thing about the series that is pretty neat is that over the course of the series thus far, only like a week's time has passed.
Great battles and the Reavers are awesome.

I haven't started reading the Runelord series yet, but guarantee you that I definitely will!! It looks to have an amazing storyline and the book covers look great too, especially that Brotherhood of the Wolf one!! And Kevin, as to your comment about the series not being well-talked about and popular, I'd have to disagree with you and say that from what I've seen, it's getting really popular now. They even are producing an rpg on Game Boy Color that is based on it.

Actually it started out as a video-game idea and morphed into the novels.
Wizardborn made the extended NYT Bestseller list its first week out. It has been growing in popularity.
