All right, I'm decidedly being a jerk and putting this in the Fantasy section instead of General Fiction, because evidently more people look at fantasy...
Does anyone know of any good modern (as in, not Oliver Twist) thief-type fiction? Preferably fantasy, but any genre backdrop can do. I got Scott Lynch, and now I'm hungry for some more!

Well, they're mysteries, but Lawrence Block's Bernie Rhodenbarr books are really entertaining. Bernie is a cat-burglar who always manages to get embroiled in a murder plot. The books are light, fast and funny reads. I'd check one out if I were you. I can't think of any sff books about thiefs that I've read off the top of my head.

Man, I can't think of many, but Conan was a thief in a couple of those.

Juliet McKenna wrote a series of books about a thief. I think one (maybe the first) is titled Thief's Gamble.

Check Out the Robert Asprin edited anthology: Thieves' World. It's not just about thieves, but it is a cool setting.

Yes, thats right (though not all of the books in the series focus on the thief as main protagonist). They aren't earth shattering or blindingly original fantasy novels, but they are enjoyable and well worth reading.

There a number of books that fall into that vein - the midlist and "unsung" books of the genre. Perfectly Acceptable Books to Read for Fun.
