HAHA!
That's really funny that you all liked the old kingdom books. I read Lirael, but when I was halfway through Sabriel I borrowed 'The Gift' from the library, and began to read it for the first time. It was so good I scrapped Sabriel all together and never went back. Also the laminated aeroplane thing was a little odd. I'm not crazy about very out-there stuff. I also like Eragon (so into dragons, hence my name), Robert Jordan's 'Wheel of Time', and Song of the Lioness, though I only just discovered it and it's a bit young for me.
I'm also planning to read the earthsea books in the near future, coz they got such a good review!

I love Dragons too, Emerald!!
I really really need a book to read......Im getting too fustrated with trying to draw the characters, I think I did a better job of copying the broach and lyre, but they are no work of art.....................................

Let me see, most of the books I'd recommend have been mentioned (eg Old Kingdom Trilogy, His Dark Materials, Obernewtyn, The Immortals - the first fantasy series I ever read!). Here are a couple of others:
Trudi Canavan - the Black Magician Trilogy (made me cry)
Terry Goodkind - Sword of Truth Series (this one's still going, and as a series it's been a bit up and down, but still has its gripping, emotional moments).
Russell Kirkpatrick - The Fire of Heaven Trilogy. I was attracted to these books because of their beautiful covers. Good stuff.
Three years ago I would've recommended Robert Jordan but his latest books have become very confusing plot-wise...no offence to any big fans out there.
Non fantasy: Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca (chilling stuff), the Brontes (love Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre), curious incident of the dog in the night, brian caswell...there are more but can't remember.
I also just remembered a book by gillian rubenstein (aka Lian Hearn) called "Galax Arena". It's the first in a series and it's more sci-fi than fantasy, but original and engaging just the same.
