*Gasp* Peter Jackson's going to direct it? Then I can't wait!
My librarian and various other people have told me to read The Lovely Bones... the general consensus seems to be that it's a good book.

"his dark materials" movies!!!
They better not mess them up!!! Books of such sheer brilliance demand respect and quality!!!
BTW: which book is called "The Golden Compass?" is that like an American title or somthing? I've only heard of them being "The Northern Lights", "The Subtle Knife" and "The Amber Spyglass"
humbled by the brilliance of His Dark Materials

It's the American title for 'Northern Lights' I think. Why would they change it for Americans? I never understood why they had to change Harry potter and the philosopher's stone to sorcerer's stone.
owleye, juliet marillier writes fantasy based on irish/british history and folklore. it's probably much looser in historical fact than the one gemini is reading, but marillier's books are always very well researched and well written. my only criticism is that each series is quite similar in plot and even the characters get repetitive after you've read a couple of books...but still, they are page-turners. i'd recommend the sevenwaters trilogy.

Yes, Northern Lights is called "The Golden Compass" in Canada and the U.S. I'm not sure why they changed it, but it was probably for the same reason why they changed "Philosopher's Stone" to "Sorceror's Stone" (Harry Potter)for the Americans - an interest thing. I guess "The Golden Compass" and "Sorceror's Stone" were more appealing titles; they were worried that "Philosopher's Stone" and "Northern Lights" were not, and thus that kids here wouldn't pick up the books and read them. Unfortunately, most people do judge books by their covers AND titles.

I've read through a great collection of books during the first week of the holidays. They include:
Jimmy the hand by Raymond E.Feist
The Novice by Trudi Canavan
Shaman's crossing by Robin Hobb.
I thoroughly recommend them! Great books.
And I've just begun the prince of nothing by R.Scott Bakker.
