I just finished reading Valiant: a Tale of Modern Faerie, by Holly Black. She also wrote Tithe: a Modern Faerie Tale, as well. Valiant was quite good... it's set in the modern world, but it was quite gritty for what I'm used to. The main character lives with a bunch of homeless kids in the New York City underground, and everything is described in vivid, blunt detail... their blankets smelling like cat urine, the hot greasy stench of a spring roll, the odour of bodies that havent been washed for days and days... but it's pretty cool how Holly Black blends together the world of faeries with the modern world. I personally liked Tithe better, maybe because I could relate to the main character in Tithe more than I could to the main character in Valiant, but yeah.
I'd reccommend Tithe, but just a warning - there IS some... rough language in the books - Valiant had the F word in quite a few times, and the books say they're for teens 14 and up. You decide whether or not you can handle it.
Happy new year, everyone!

owleye - I too recommend The Sevenwaters Trilogy by Juliet Mariller, it has to be the best out of the books I've read by her.
Also has anyone read Charmed Sphere by Catherine Asaro. I never met anyone who has and it's a brilliant book....
