Custos, once again, more in common! I've been meaning to get my hands on Valiant for some time now. Tithe is one of my favorite books [and not just because it's set in New Jersey ;) ] but because it's a marvelous fairy tale and the characters are so easy to get attached to. Since I finished the Naming last night, I've started a book this morning called Kung Fu High School and I already find it high amusing. It's not really fantasy; it's about a high school that is run by a drug dealer and the only way to survive is to know some form of martial arts. It's a really strange idea but I have an obsession [I have a few of these] with martial arts movies and animes so I thought I'd give the book a look over. I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy with magic and sword fighting to take a look at some of Tamora Pierce's books. The Lioness Quartet remains to be my favorite books of all time and I read them atleast once a year. Alanna is a fiery young red head who disguises herself as a boy so she may become a knight. I first picked her books up 5 years ago and they still manage to capture me when I sit down with them. A few other books worth looking at that sit highly on my extensive book shelf include:
His Dark Materials Trilogy by Phillip Pullman
The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix
The Fall of a Kindom by Hilari Bell [Also part of a series but I haven't had a chance to get any of the bother books.]
The Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer
The Darkangel Trilogy by Meredith Ann Pierce

i also recommend The Lioness Quartet. I was the first one to borrow it form my school library in 18 years, last yr. I then had to but my own copy AND the ones that follow it. I also recommend :
The Otori Trilogy - Lian Hearn
The Bartimaeus Trilogy - Johnathan Stroud
Anything by Grath Nix

I know, though I think that the last one lacked a bit. i dind that with most books when they're the last in a trilogy e.g. his dark materials. How the Almighty died was a bit weird and I would have liked it done differently....

hmm read his dark materials. not all trilogies are like that, lord of the rings for example was three books and imo they were all brilliant.

yep, but too many fit this theory e.g. the Abhorsen trilogy. though brilliant. the last one was a bit of a let down after the first two

Hm... I wasn't disappointed at all by the third installment in the Abhorsen trilogy, even though the second one - Lirael - was my personal favourite. Actually, I've found some of the more recent Artemis Fowl books a bit disappointing... they don't seem quite as funny or original as the first few...
So what's the Otori trilogy about?

I thought that Abhorsen was amazing! I'm curious, why did everyone find it a bit of a let down? I personally loved how everything came together in the end for the big fight, it was so monumental and - there was just this feeling of absolute legendariness, if that's a word, lol, and I was so sad when... a certain character died - I thought it was wonderful. That novel also really made me think, like at that moment when they met... eep I've forgotten her name, but she was one of the original seven and was like time itself or something...? And she talked to Mogget... (I need to reread these books). So, outta curiousity, why were other people disappointed by Abhorsen?
