Also started reading the Hunger Games book, halfway through Catching Fire right now.
Katniss has just found out that she has to go back to the Arena for the Quell Games. Seriously, there's no way she can go back, the second she goes inside she's dead, Snow's going to make sure of that and she can't die, ahhhh :(
I just finished Catching Fire the other day and it's just incredible . . . I really can't wait for the final book, Mockingjay, but it's not out until August. :(

I went to the store ready to buy it, but they didn't have it!!! I mean, we're talking Borders, big chain company, and they didn't have it!!:eek: I bought a couple of other books instead, but can't remember the titles at the moment....:o Need sleep!

HELLO! Um, yeah. My most recent post on this thread was so obnoxious. But also true. xP
Anyway, I've suddenly started reading a ton, which is good. Last week I read Unique by Alison Allen Gray, The Returners by Gemma Malley, and reread The Diary of a Young Girl. This week I'm reading What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell, which is pretty good. Just not great. I also finally read The Book Thief. Hm. Mixed opinions on that.

Huh, the reactions to the Book Thief I've heard have overwhelmingly been really positive, as was mine - what didn't you like? I'm curious now! :)

Well. I suppose most of my problems just stem from the viewpoint. It does feel a little as if the "narration by Death" aspect was mostly a gimmick. While the viewpoint is very cynical and callous most of the time, leading to some really astounding lines which sort of make you sit up and pay attention, that is sort of in doubt due to some later scenes. Death is not impervious to the deaths in the Holocaust. There is a tender scene where he describes picking up people's souls from the gas chamber. And yet he manages to come up with those cynical, faux-perceptive observations on the same subject. It's just not consistent. It could be argued that this is showing the two sides of his character, but he is reacting in completely different ways to the same events, which leads me to doubt the sincerity of his snarky little comments - and also begin to feel that they are uncalled for, and, however fresh, somewhat belittling of the actual events. Also due to the Death-ness, I found it hard to empathise with any characters other than Liesel and Rudy. The perspective is just too removed to make it an emotional story. Apart from the sarcastic one-liners, there are also the cheesy ones. The ones like: "You don't always get what you wish for. Especially in Nazi Germany," which threw me off the narrative completely and only cheapened the story. If they were meant to be satirical, I can say that it didn't work for me.
That said, the beginning was striking and interesting, and The Word Shaker was an absolutely brilliant piece. If it had been just that little scrap of a fable, I'd have loved the book.
