Okay, take your local superhero - ie. anyone with unusual abilities or powers, kill them off, and leave to marinate before bringing out to ressurect. Then discuss.
Name: Gandalf (the Grey)
Created by: J.R.R. Tolkien
Background: A wizard. He did party tricks, made amazing fireworks, and was regarded as a man of much wisdom, privy to the council of (and advisor to) many of Middle Earth's wizest rulers.
Powers: Some magic. Full abilities unknown. Posessed large amounts of knowledge and wisdom.
Death: Fighting a Balrog on a bridge above a vast chasm in Khazad-dum, the bridge collapses and takes them both down with it. Gandalf falls to certain death.
Ressurection (if any): Later appears in Fangorn forest to Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli, now named Gandalf the White, imbued with more power and seemingly invincible to physical weapons. We learn he is one of the Maia (though I can't remember when or how) http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif
Last spotted: At the Grey Havens, ready to board ship.
Feeling: I felt absolutely crushed when Gandalf died (as did he most likely). I think the way he was brought back was done well, and was believable.
Anyone else have any favourites? The only conditions are that they have powers of some kind, and have died. (they dont have to be ressurected or anything)

***********SPOILER***********
I couldn't let this one pass without mentioning Faraday in the Axis Trilogy by Sara Douglass.(Note that I've learnt my lesson after my first posting when I didn't do the "spoiler" thing).
I have to admit that the demise of this character was what made me stop buying novels before reading then first from the library. I was absolutely devastated by the ending of this trilogy and as I am a MAJOR sucker for a happy ending, I vowed never to buy another book unless I was sure the goodies win in the end. (Although I haven't really stuck to this very well I must admit).
Call me soppy and a spoilt-sport but I have also been known to check out the end of a book first to make sure the important ones are still there (just so I don't get too attached if they're not).
Thankfully, Sara brought Faraday back in the next series, so all was forgiven.
Then, of course, there's Tas's unfortunate ending in the Weis/Hickman series but he's back well and truly now as well. Not as heart wrenching as Faraday but I still shed a tear when the little guy got squashed in the original books. (Its very hard to read, I must say, when you have tears in your eyes - makes the moment drag out even longer until you can see again)

My most memorable character death wasn't in a novel, but a video game I'm sure most people are familar with. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif
NAME: Aeris
CREATED BY: Hironobu Sakaguchi
BACKGROUND: An innocent flower girl in the industrialized city of Midgar. She was the last of an ancient race dedicated to the preservation of Earth (like elves) called the Cetra.
POWERS: Healing arts, and the ability to use the legendary White Materia.
DEATH: Her heart gets literally pierced by sword of the main antagonist, Sephiroth.
RESSURECTION: Doesn't get ressurected. However Aeris is a factor in saving the world from destruction in the end by using the lifestream to ward of the cataclasmic Meteor spell.
LAST SPOTTED: Cloud lays her to rest in a bottomless(?) river.
FEELING: This really surprised me. Back then, I didn't assume that a console game RPG would be mature enough to tackle the fact that for a story to avoid being too idealistic, a main protagonist should die. The last time I saw a main protagonist as important as Aeris die so early in a story was probably in Dune, when the Lord of House Atreides died.

SPOILER FF7
When Aeris died the thing that really disturbed me was the way sephiroth smiled straight afterwards. I just sat in awe thinking this guy is an awesome bad guy.
He had a kickass sword as well!

Well, don't read any of Martin's works. He kills LOTS of main characters. To say more would be spoiler, but believe me : you will be SHOCKED when certain characters die. And death is PERMANENT...well, almost...there is resurrection magic, but in Martin's world all magic exacts a price to be used.

...exactly why I read and like Martin's work Habeed. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif
What I meant above was that, it was surprising that a video game would contain the same sense of plot maturity.

Name: Obi Wan Kenobi aka Ben Kenobi
Created by: George Lucas
Background: A Jedi Master, one of the last. Impetuously thought he could train Anakin Skywalker, then later on killed by his former pupil in the guise of a Sith Lord, Darth Vader.
Powers: The Force.
Death: On the Death Star while allowing his protege and Darth Vader's son Luke Skywalker escape with his friends.
Resurrection: Appears as a ghost, repeating "Use the Force, Luke" several times throughout the series. Later resurrected for commercial purposes in the horrible Episode 1.
Last Spotted: In Episode 2??
Feeling: I think that the first prequel has more undermined the original series than actually adding to it.
