I went off on a Roger Zelazny kick last month, and I have to tell you, there ain't two just like him. Honestly, I haven't liked all of his books (Donnerjack and Lord Demon didn't tickle me like they should have, considering the premise), but let's face it, most of his books are excellent, and a couple are absolutely stunning. Neil Gaiman once said that "The bastard writing children of Roger Zelazny are an undying many", and I'm forced to agree whole- heartedly.

For no particular reason, here's my five favorite Zelazny books:

1) A Night in the Lonesome october
2) Lord of Light
3) Isle of the Dead
4) My name is Legion
5) The next one I read, i'm sure

There is a compilation of stories in the honor of Zelazny, called "Lord of the Fantastic"...any RZ fans should check it out. It's excellent, and I feel that some of the stories in it are amongst the best the respective authors have ever written.

I was holding the Complete Amber 1-10 in one volume in my hands today, you did not mention it or did you? I know I will read it eventually just feel the need to have a copy of that. I re-visit a Night in Lonesome October...well, every Oct. right near All Hallows Eve. Love it, glad to see it first on your list. I'll use the others as a good indication of where to look next.

Heh, Roger Zelazny is my favorite author and A night in the lonesome october is my favorite book ever probably.
Thoughtcriminal84, Lord Demon and Donnarjack were completed after his death by Jane Lindskold so they are a little less good but still great read in my opinion.

It's true that many are the bastard writing children of Roger Zelazny among them Neil Gaiman and Steven Brust and George R.R. Martin said about Silberberg's Legends that too bad it was written after Zelazny died so it couldn't have had an Amber story as well...

The books you mentioned are some great ones, i can recommend you also To Die in Italbar the sequel to Isle of the Dead.
Creatures of Light and Darkness that when Lord of Light is dealing with hindu mythology, that book is dealing with egyptian mythology but imo is even better.
Roadmarks that tells the story about a long road that instead of taking people through space, takes them through time and the few people that are able to walk it.
Jack of Shadows, about a world that stopped revolving around itself and in the always dark hemisphere there is a civilization of magic while in the light side a civilization of high tech.
This Immortal, about Conrad, a man that just can't die in a future Earth ruled by aliens (the inspiration to The Madness Season by C.S. Friedman).
And there are many other great books and shorts stories.

And of course The Amber Chronicles is of the best fantasy series of all time imo with Corwin, maybe my favorite protagonist ever.
Amber is divided to two series of 5 books each and Zelazny intended to write a 3rd one because the 2nd one leaves some loose ends, he wrote several short stories that are set between the 2nd and 3rd chronicles that makes you to really want to read the 3rd chronicles... but he died before writing it... real sad.

This Immortal has to be my favorite. The writing is sheer poetry, each sentence beautifully crafted. I don't believe there is another mortal on earth who has conquered and revered the first person better than Zelazny.

Well, Zelazny was first of the writers I read and he's still my favourite. I was looking through my books several days ago and found A Night in the Lonesome October. I reread it and found a lot of what I missed when I read it first time. The book is simply great.
I love Amber series as well and plan to reread them as well. Those are recommended to anyone who's tired of typical fantasy.
Also, I read some book Zelazny was writing with some other author right before his death and the book is great as well, though it is quite diferent from usual Zelazny's books.
Anyways, everyone READ ZELAZNY!

There was trade paperback reissued just this month called Dream something. It looked good and I considered picking it up. Do any of you know it?

Kierk Soren: I think Captain Sisko from DS9 is a Knight of Faith.

If you mean The Dream Master, that's actually the one Zelanzy book that i didn't like.
It's about a man that can control people's dreams, but it's really hard to read and the story isn't interesting enough to keep you at the effort.
Then again, i read it when i was pretty young, i might give it another try because some people say it's great.

I have the "Complete Amber Sourcebook", which is an encyclopedia for Zelazny's Amber world, it has EVERYTHING about it, characters, places, events, creatures, items, lore...
it took me a lot of time to finish reading it, it is a massive and demanding volume. does anyone here read it also?

After all the good raps he's been getting I decided to go down the bookshop and grab a copy of anything I could find. Weiss, Wurts. No Z!!!!
Looks like I'll be buying over the internet.

Zelazny is something special. His Amber series is no-doubt one of my favourite fantasy stories. I'm still reading Lord of Light, and it's very enjoyable, very philospohical, and probably a personal favourite.

I have many favourites :D
