We now have 3 books by Martin and one on the way. What scares me is that around book 4 some writers start to go down hill.
Like Jorden
Like Goodkin
I know that if Martin goes down this road I would feel very ripped off and upset.
Has he got the juice left in him to keep up his top story? I hope so.
Will he finish up his story next book?
Just a thought.

Let's hope that doesn't happen.
For some reason I've thought there would be about five books in A Song of Ice and Fire. I'm not sure why though - I could be wrong.

There will be a total of six books, two trilogies.
The fourth book will be called,
4. A Dance with Dragons
5. The Winds of Winter
6. A Time for Wolves (this title GRRM said he may change).

Yes, Martin, to Rupert Avery you listen! Dull books lead to anger of fans, anger of fans leads to hate, their hate will lead to your suffering! That is the way of things! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

I've also found myself wondering if Martin can keep up the quality of his books until the end of the series. For some reason, I think book four (A Dance with Dragons) is the key. If it is up to the quality of the first three (or maybe even better) then I think its a safe bet that we won't be seeing a "Path of Daggers" type effort from GRRM. In my opinion, ASoIaF is the best thing I have ever read, in any genre. I re-read parts of the series every now and then and just marvel anew at what I discover hidden in the pages. I'm sure George won't dissapoint us with book four.
This series is starting to pile up the accolades. Hugo award nomination for Storm of Swords. Number 2 position on the Internet Top 100 SF/Fantasy list (behind only Lord of the Rings). SF Site's Reader's Choice Award for Storm of Swords. Glowing reviews on Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble etc. Another cool thing - John Howe, the legendary Tolkien artist has recently signed on to do original art for a special edition of A Clash of Kings. These special editions are pricy - I recently spent $250.00 on a special edition of A Game of Thrones - but they are beautiful. Other great fantasy artists are doing other books in the trilogy - Charles Vess and Tom Canty are two I can recall.
As good as the first three books were, what if the last three are even better? Oh man, scary thought.

Lets hope Martin wins the Nebula this year.
From what I have read, Martin is treating aSoIF as two trilogies, so whatever that means, if it even has truth to it, the books will be good. The books have been getting better with each volume, like Rhaegar said, if that upward trend continues---OOOH-FAH!
