For those who can't get enough fat fantasies, check this out:

Any opinions, recommendations, objections?

IMHO, the books here show that fat fantasies aren't just the usual fare but could actually bust @$$. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

Kearney's books? Oh yes, very good series. I'm interested in reading that Tom Arden series. Anyone has the word on this?

The Kearney series is excellent, but, to call it a Fat Fantasy, I am not sure.. Each book is only about 300 pages or so.. but, their is 5 books to the series.

As to the Tom Arden, beats me.. I've heard generally positive stuff from reviewers (Al La Sfsite), but, nothing much else.

The Tom Arden books are pretty strange. I've only read the first one, but it was certainly different from the "average" fantasy book. I can't say I really enjoyed it though. Arden seemed to really enjoy pushing the limits of grossness and I just don't go for gross stuff. I can't specifically remember much about it, other than a kid breaking a cat's back for fun.

I found the story to be pretty slow. Interesting writing style, but slow. My SO read the whole series and he was left saying "what the heck?" after the last book.

I guess if you are looking for something different it might be ok. The series just wasn't my cup of tea.

On the list here is what I can speak of:

Fool's Errand by my name it should be evident how huge a Hobb fan I am. She keeps getting better and this book is evidence of that.

Thomas Harlan: Only read the first book in his Oath of Empire series and enjoyed. Now that the series is drawing closer to completion, I plan on picking up the remaining books

James Barclay: Loved his Chronicles of the Raven series. Fun fantasy adventure. Wish he was more readily available here in the US.

I plan on picking up Hawkwood's Voyage when funds alloow a bookstore trip.

I enjoy perusing his list every year. I usually tend to find something new to try...

My SO read the whole series and he was left saying "what the heck?" after the last book.
Caly, fyi, the fifth and final book in this series has yet to be published. Your SO may want to keep an eye out for it.

But then his take on Harlan and Van Lustbader should have been the warning shots o'er the bow.
John, what did you mean by this comment? Did you not like either of these books? I have yet to read them, but they sound pretty intriguing to me. What didn't you like about them?

Regarding Kearney, I really liked his series and it only gets better as it goes along IMO.

And I have to agree with his comments about Robin Hobb. I think her farseer books have darn near propelled her into my 'favorite author' status. GGK is still hanging in there though, mainly thanks to my disappointment in Robin Hobb's Liveship series.

I wonder how Jordan was missing of the list for 'THE WHERE IS IT? AWARD FOR CONSPICUOUS ABSENCE'? Perhaps it's because no one expects him to ever actually finish the WOT? http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif
