I know some of you know of it or have read it. I'm considering it so tell me what you thought of Songs of Earth & Power-the Infinity concerto and the Serpent Mage.

I read it a couple of years ago, thought it was really good, above average fantasy. I would highly recommend it.
Scale of 1 to 10 I give it about a 7.

I have read these two books, before they were published as one, and, thoroughly enjoyed them. Greg Bear is one of favorite authors, and Eon still ranks as one of my all-time favortie reads!
I was surprised to see that he has written a Star Wars book though. I thought he would have been above that...

I also read them when they were separate books (before Bear went back to them for a light rework, that is). I thought they were pretty entertaining, but not spectacularly so. My favorite of his is Slant which was much better than his recent Hugo nominated Darwin's Radio.
There have been a surprising number of good writers who have done tie-ins (Vonda McIntyre, James Blish, Elizabeth Hand to name but a few). I gather that the reasons are excellent pay, shorter writing time, and exposure to a new segment of readership.

To further stray this topic...
Matthew Stover is doing a Star Wars tie-in.

Erebus, I thought the Bear's Star Wars: Rogue Planet was excellent!! You definitely should read it if you're into the Star Wars saga. It gives a lot more foreshadowing into the prequels!
FitzFlagg, what Star Wars tie-in is Matthew Stover doing? Is it a novel in the New Jedi Order series?

Z-16, I think it is part of the New Jedi Order, I think it comes out end of this year or the beginning of next year.
Eon was good, how did Infinity stack up?

So it is a so-so read, over at amazon they were raving about it. I suppose you could attribute this to the fact that they were reviewing from the sci-fi fan perspective as in " this is not your usual fantasy...intelligent fantasy" and so on. I am hyped about Eon and Moving Mars though. Have you noticed that the posts for this board far outwiegh the sci-fi board, 5,527 to 440, ouch. lately we have been crossing over in the posts here into sci-fi and I would like to suggest maybe combining them. You could specify in subject heading s/f ; what is? just as an example. I suppose I'm just lazy as I don't check that forum often. Who here is both a sci fi fan and fantasy and checks that board so I know I will get an answer?

There has always been more activity in the FANTASY section than any other section.
I would prefer to keep them separate.

Yeah I kinda figured, guess it doesn't hurt if we cross over slightly in our posts right? I've only mentioned what is considered sci-fi/fantasy anyhow.
