Well Polgara,
I hate to disagree with your Dad but the Many Coloured Land was one of the only series I just couldn't bring myself to finish. I found it EXTREMELY boring and tedious.
Just my opinion though - you'll never know if you don't give it a try yourself.

I liked it myself. It kind of takes its time to get going but The Exiles series (The Many Coloured Land is the first book) is a pretty good series.

Polgara... I am afraid to say, that in this case...Father knows best, groans from all over the forum...

The Saga of the Exiles is one of the best series of books I have ever read... I agree the 1st book does take a while get into, but the following books are very fast paced. Julian May can really write!

I fully agree with Dennizm. The saga of the exiles is one of the best series ever written, maybe the best.
In my opinion it's even better than asofai because the perspective is slightly more "female".
I can't understand why anybody wouldn't want to finish it?
It's very innovative, many unexpected plot twists, depth of character, has a lot of interesting protagonists, not t h e main hero and like with Martin she's not afraid to let the good guys n girls die and the villains live.
I fully agree with your dad: It's not old crab, I very strongly recommend to read it, it's a treasure.
The "Galactic Milieu" series by Julian May is terrific as well, but sf.

Boy - now I feel like the odd one out!!!
I read (well most of it anyway) this series a few years ago but now I'm thinking I must have missed something. Perhaps I should give it another try. I've never touched anything else of hers because I didn't enjoy this series but maybe I should give her a second chance.

I thought it was pretty good. Don't usually read anything remotely SF but that one held me through all the books... And i still remember some of the characters 16 years on, so that says something....!!!

Would be interested to know what other people think about the Saga of the Exiles series since I'm thinking of having a delve in.

One other thing- I've heard that there's more books after saga of the exiles, and quite a number of them at that. What's the publishing order?

Wow...always good to see an old thread bumped up.

I have a copy of Conqueror's Moon arriving any day now - more fantasy than her previous work.

In the Exiles series, the publishing order is:

Pliocene Exiles - original series

1. The Many-Coloured Land (1981)
2. The Golden Torc (1981)
3. The Nonborn King (1983)
4. The Adversary (1984)

Then there is: Intervention - about the events of the develelopment of the Galactic Milieu, that led to the Exile.

5. Intervention (1987) but published in the US as 2 separate books:
5a. The Surveillance (1988)
5b. Metaconcert (1988)
The book acts as a bridge between the Exiles books and the Galactic Milieu series.

Galactic Milieu
Fills in the gaps of the story before Many Coloured Land (about the events of the develelopment of the Galactic Milieu) but IMO perhaps better read in publication order:

6. Jack the Bodiless (1992)
7. Diamond Mask (1994)
8. Magnificat (1996)

Rampart World - unrelated SF series

1. Perseus Spur (1998)
2. Orion Arm (1999)
3. Sagittarius Whorl (2001)

Boreal Moon - Fantasy series

1. Conquerors Moon (2003)

Hope this helps!
