thinking about using. Its a fantasy novel(DUH) where it takes place in modern day but all the heroes/villains are dressed how they should be in a regular fantasy(tunics, armour, cloaks etc) and they will use fantasy or normal names.

PS:i'm a newbie

Welcome, Suart!

If this was a film (or a graphic novel), it would have nice surreal effect. But I'm not sure how to do this in writing. Not impossible, though.

What about the architecture?

Do the public dress like that?

If not, do they consider someone in that sort of dress a freak, or do they recognize their authority?

Sounds like a typical SCA gathering to me.

It does sound like the Society for Creative Anachronism doesn't it, or a Renaissance Fair. Both of which might be useful for research. So they dress in tunics, but they have computers and such? Sounds very interesting. Nothing springs to mind as a possibly helpful novel, but you might want to look at the humorous fantasy that takes place in a contemporary setting.

Not that you are necessarily doing a comic fantasy, but that sort of juxtaposition is more likely to show up in comic fantasy works.

It's a good idea, sometimes you'll see sci-fi with futuristic technology in a less sophisticated setting and armour and clothes from medieval times, so it's not completely original yet.

Have you any other ideas, or is this it? You should think a bit more about the world you are creating and post again for more feedback.

Ideas are a dime a dozen. What matters is the writing.

This might not seem like very helpful advice, but it's really the only good advice you can receive on a topic like this. Stupid concepts can turn into amazing stories, and likewise very unique stories with a great deal of potential can be utterly ruined by bad writing.

So don't sweat the idea. It doesn't matter if we like it. What matters is if you love the idea enough to write a whole book out of it.

I resemble that remark! :D Seriously, as someone who has ended up having to stop at Wal-mart in renaissance garb, I can say that your characters would have to deal with a lot of stupidity from the "mundanes". The most common being "are you in a play?", followed closely by "which one of you is Legolas?" (or Frodo, or Xena.. you get the idea).

I actually have started writing a novel (or series, maybe) regarding refugee fantasy creatues in the modern world. Part of the dangers they would face would be discovery by our kind who are not in the know.

On the flip side of that, if the characters were walking around openly you might have a situation similar to the reality show "Who Wants to Be a Superhero", where the participants run around in (usually cheesy looking) costumes in public places. That would lend itself more to a comedy, as was mentioned earlier.

Sounds like that comic book "Fables".

Thats a bit what it's like in "The Fantastic Four".

I've read neither comics, so I don't know why I know these things...
