I was going to mention him but a few things stopped me -- his books are only easily available in Australia (any good news on that front yet?)

Sorry to revive such an old thread, but the answer now is YES - sort of. My publisher has just agreed to release the first book in the series as a completely free download:

So, easily available to all ;-)

Very cool, mon.

I'm sure you greet the free release with mixed emotions. Hope it works to stimulate your sales.

Not mixed at all - it was all my own idea, and it's taken me a couple of months to convince the publisher to go with it.

I firmly believe it's the way forward for the series ... 2-3 year-old books are rarely re-ordered by bookstores, which means you end up with (for example) only books 3 & 4 on the shelf. Who's going to start a new series if they can't get hold of the first book easily? I know I wouldn't.

There's also the school factor - Hal's damn good fun, and this afternoon I got my ELR statement which tells me there are almost 1000 copies of Hal Spacejock (book 1) in school libraries across Australia. Now every teenager in Australia (and worldwide) can download and read the book for nothing.
