Well being a true blue kiwi newly arrived to the US of A I'm stunned like a mullet to find that there is actually a New Zealand fantasy author out there that I've never heard of! Juliet Marillier. I've never read anything of hers at all and saw a reference to her on another thread. Can someone give me a little more info on her work?
Other NZ authors that I'm aware of that have written fantasy-ish books (worth a read) are
Maurice Gee. Under the Mountain (young adult level, massive evil beings lurking under the volcanic peaks of Auckland city)
Phillip Temple ...Beak of the Moon (kinda like watership down with mountain parrots)
Other than that I draw a blank. Most NZ fiction is that (IMO) crappy kind of 'serious' literature stuff that's as depressing as waking up to find your prized Emporer Anglefish sitting on the carpet watching TV!
Would be grateful for any replies http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Juliet Marillier's Daughter of the Forest and Son of Shadows is in my pile to read. I brought Loads of books, which I'm reading quite fast, and by the end of the month I think I would have read them.
There are one or two fans here, who liked her books.

Mullet! Mullet! Mullet!
Nothing to start the laughter like mention of a mullet.
I think Marillier writes Celtic based fantasy.
Giarc, welcome to US, where in the states are you?

Daughter of the Forests (mariller) is one of those fairy tales made into story books(it's a hans christian anderson, or a swiss one, or a brothers grimm, i forget. the fairy tale that is). i think it's been done really well and like the book. i haven't been able to find out the name of the second one though.

tamlyn, the second one is called Son of Shadows. I've still haven't read them, but there on my shelf on my to read pile. I'm reading the first five Amber chronicles for the first time at the moment. The 3rd and final book in the trilogy comes out in January, and I think its going to be called something like 'Child of Prophecy'.

Ah, so you're on the left coast. I was in Seattle about this time last year, one of the nicest cities I've visited. Best seafood.
You were reported missing on our "Where'd they go" post a month or two ago.

*laugh* Missing eh? Some might say I'm still not all here! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif Ah well. I'll have to look up that thread and see what they said http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif
Seattle is a nice place but the traffic gives me nightmares! I'm used to lil' ol New Zealand where missing one lightcycle is sufficient justification for road rage! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif
