My friend and I are trying to remember the title of a book. It was a required reading in 8th grade (it was compared against Farenheit 451 by the teacher)...

It was a futuristic story about men and women who were seperated and not allowed to be together, they might have had to take some pills to moderate their hormones. They couldn't feel or think. People had numbers instead of names. They were possibly slaves or something because people were in chains at times. A man and a woman who liked each other ran off together in the woods. I want to say the main character had a special gift like reading minds or something.

The book MIGHT have either had a forest on the cover or the title might have had something to do with a forest or the woods.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks so much!

Sounds like "Anthem" by Ayn Rand. However, I don't remember anyone in chains or the lead character reading minds.
