well, actually it's a trilogy. Someone once told me about it, but I can't remember the title/author.

It's about a "foreign object" that approaches earth. Since there is no sign of life on that "ship" , people on earth send a team to investigate what it exactly is. I think eventually the team is lost and in one of the other books in the trilogy, after thousands ( ?) of years the "ship" passes again earth, and a new team is sent to find out what happened to the first crew.

I know i'm very vague here, but if you can point me to the book, you'd make my day. It's a trilogy, so it should be more or less "famous" I guess?

Thanks is advance.

W.

Rendezvous with Rama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendezvous_with_Rama) by A. C. Clarke (1972).

A classic.

Aye, an excellent read. You're actually looking for four books by the way, Rendezvous with Rama and the Rama trilogy that followed, co-written by Gentry Lee.
