I wish to acknowledge that I personally believe David Eddings is the best fantasy writer of all. JRRT and Robbie Jordan practically have to kneel down and kiss David Eddings and pray that he doesn't banish & exile them!!

Eddings has it all. The characters of hi 2 series of 5 books regarding belgarion are 3-D'ed. The characters are real and the story is practically realistic!! He actually include a lot of politics and romance in his stories as well as the usual slaying and casting spells.

Sorry guys, but there is nothing you can do to change my mind that David Eddings is the Godfather of Fantasy.

Belgarion:

I hope you know you just put the proverbial bullseye on your forehead and "kick-me" sign on your back with that statement.

I myself haven't read Eddings.

Welcome!

One must not forget to check the expiry dates on all prescriptions regularly...

Eddings' characters have one dimension, are foolish, all, except perhaps the main one, are like shapes of gray. His plots are childish and not realistic. His combat scenes suck! If a god doesn't die in his book he will. His travels are boring and full of endlees, pointless discusions...

Sorry, you can't say anything that will change my mind about this... writer? I don't think the title suits him...

Hey, I admit that I enjoyed all of Eddings books when I read them.... but then again, I was only around twelve years old.

Hmm, if I were to re-read them now after reading Martin, Donaldson, and Tolkien I wonder how Eddings would stack up?

Not very well I'm afraid......

David Eddings is still one of my favourite authors even if it is only for nostalgic reasons. But as i've learnt over the past 2 years there's a hell of alot better writers out there.

I am finding it very hard to type this, because I am rolling on the floor with laughter...

That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read on this forum, but I respect you having the right to voice your opinion.

I would never dream of trying to change your opinion, but here is a tip, read The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen donaldson, find out what grown-up fantasy is all about. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

"Belgarion" let me explain something to you.
Eddings could not come up with a good plot if his life depended on it. Seeing your such a big fan you must have read the new one redemption of watchamacallit and the belgariad. They both have the same plot. a thief (belgarath, the other guy) run away from their little town are compelled to go to this place and stay there for a few hundred billion years comes out gathers some good guys and kills the bad guys. Then when i posted this on "eddings"(have a look at read/continue a topic. Wink Wink nudge nudge say no more) alot of people said its the comedy in it that counts. If you want comedy go to Terry Pratchet instead of hearing linen and belgarath bantering on about "trust me".

I rest my case
