Ok, I'm not a huge fantasy reader, but I certainly have read a ton. I read a lot of Dragon Lance when I was younger, and my favorite was by far the brothers series. I can't remember their names anymore, but I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about. I've also read a ton of Forgotten Realms in my early twenties, and I loved them all. I actually still have about 30 or 40 of them lying around one day threatening to reread them.

I didn't really read many books for about 8 years, and then decided to pick up the SOT series. Great books, despite being too long winded. I read all of them, and really couldn't put one down once I started. It been about 8 months, since I finished the last book. I was actually glad to be done with them as Richard and gang were getting on my last nerve with their goody-two-shoes attitude.

I recently decided to pick up some more, and found the Wheel of Time. Hmm, I'm sure this has been discussed tirelessly on this board, but I feel like I'm rereading SOT. I don't wish to discuss that as its clear to day to me someone has copied another someone. Anyways, I don't really care, because both a good series(es?). I'm on my third book, and it struck me; I can't handle anymore pansy heroes.

My entire life of fantasy reading has seen heroes being pushed around by women, has controlled his anger better than a Vulcan, and in the past 2 series they have been afraid to lay down a good ol' fashioned butt whooping. I'm sick of it, sick of it!!

Does anyone know a good book where the protagonist does not let morals get in his way? I want a guy, or gal, that will slap anyone who says something like "Oh, you <insert gender>, you're just wool-headed nimrods that couldn't wipe your own arse if you didn't have a <insert opposite gender> handing you the toilet paper." I want a hero that doesn't take BS from weaklings, and isn't afraid of what might happen if he lops off the head of the guy who is trying to pickpocket him. I would love to read that book! Thanks!

I'd recommend David Gemmell's Druss books

Legend
The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend
The Legend of Deathwalker

That's the published order, but Legend actually takes place at the end.

How does not being a pansy = gritty????

I never liked what I would call the "reluctant hero".
Probably why I like Zelazny.

Anything by David Gemmell. His characters lay down the law. I recommend the Waylander series in particular.

If you like the Warhammer gaming world, for Fantasy I would suggest the Gotrek and Felix novels. Many other Warhammer titles would appeal to you as well, IMO.

The Kane novels by Karl Edward Wagner
Conan Chronicles by Robert Howard
Rigante or Drenai series or Troy Trilogy by Gemmell
Characters from LOTR and Silmarillion are pretty heroic.
Definitly some of the Song of Ice and Fire characters.
Prince of Nothing series by Scott Bakker
Sword of Shadows by Jones has these sort of guys.

You can also try some historical fiction/historical Fantasy. Bernard Cornwell comes to mind. James Duffy. Steven Pressfield. Conn Igulluden's Genghis Khan series.

Heroes die by Mathew woodring stover springs to mind when thinking of a baddass hero who doesn't take **** from anyone=) However that is more of a fantasy/sci-fi book.

If you want a pure fantasy book featuring badass mofos I would highly reccomend Joe Abercroombie's The first law series. The blade itself and Before they are hanged. Logen ninefingers and his buddies are a nasty bunch to say the least=)

I also second the ones suggesting David Gemmell (my fav author ofc) as he is probably the greatest heroic fantasy writer of our time right up there with Robert E Howard.

well...most of (if not all!) the books mentioned in this thread can be found in the links i posted.

@cgw...try to look at an broader angle - see what books he read, and then tell me that he is not looking for something different (not only main character-wise).

I still stand behind the links i posted.
