I hear they are going to make movies out of LOTR. LOTR, whats the big deal? its so boring...so what if its considered as the "father" of fantasy, there are way better epic stories to spend millions of dollars on. for instance, i think the Riftwar Saga would make a kickass trilogy.

Well, I have to agree with you, the lord of the rings was boring. But that's why it might work for me as a movie. The story itself is good, just much too slow in my opinion. So if the movie can get to the point in a quicker fashion, then I may really like it.
Also, the reason that they would choose a story like the lord of the rings is becuase everyone and their grandma knows about it. It's a classic. There are other stories that are really good, ones that I think are much better than the lord of the rings, but from a marketing point of view, you need a story that will attract an audience.

If it fails to do anything else then it may just make way for a futher fantasy films, and Daughter of the Empire etc would make a good triology as well following from the original Riftwar films, as they'd give the viewer something different yet at the same time new!!

The reason LotR was chosen (aside from being hte greatest fantasy work ever) was that it is the #1 selling non-religious/non academic (i.e. textbook) work of the past 100 years. That's pretty impressive.

And still the literary snobs deride the fantasy genre... *boggle* When 'Withering heights' gets close to matching tolkien's sales I might try to stay awake long enough to read it voluntarily. Til then, the critics can go play in the traffic. Vivent l'imagination!

*gets down off soapbox and goes to stand in line at the box office*

Well titanic is the biggest money earning movie of time, does that make it the best movie. No chance. Titanic sucked like a viet namese whore. Just because something sells doesn't mean it's good.

Sales certainly do prove popularity however. So if you're going to make a movie of a book, why not pick the most popular one?
And it is a good story to boot. I'm predicting this movie to knock Titanic from the number one spot.

It might knock Star Wars out of the 2nd spot. But i'm pretty pessimistic about its chances to knock Titanic out of the 1st spot.
Ever seen a chart of the best grossing movies of all time?
Titanic is so much ahead...

The only reason Titanic made so much money was loads of sad people watched it several times in the cinema.

But I think that LOTR will easily enter the top 10, but the first film won't be that good, until it reaches the 2nd and 3rd books where most of the action is.

I think Harry Potter may just beat LOTR, because the amount of Advertising its doing. though it'll be very close. Put your bets down.

Goddamn, it will be depressing if Harry Potter becomes the biggest grossing film of all time.
