Heard of this book?

I'm looking for the title or author of this book I read when I was a teenager. It had a main character named Brian. It took place in a futuristic world where everyone was running out of food and the government was regulating what people could eat and how much. Brian's mother and sister had already disappeared and his father vanished during the course of the book. Brian teams up with a girl named Heather. They think everyone is leaving to travel to a new, more viable world. They are wanted on the new world too, because Brian can grow food and Heather is studying to be a doctor. They solve the puzzle, narrowly escape some government officials, and go through a missile silo to join in an experiment in suspended animation. The idea is that they'll wake up after everyone else dies off and the world has replenished itself. Has anyone heard of this book?

That sounds really familiar. I read a book much like it maybe twenty five years ago.

Naturally I can't remember the name. I'll check back if it comes to me.
