I have read and loved (and sincerely recommend)the following fanasy novels:
James Barclay's 'Chronicles of the Raven'trilogy
Terry Goodkind's 'Sword of Truth' series (1st 4 only- the others sucked)
J V Jones 'Cavern of Black Ice'
Robin Hobb's 'Liveship traders'trilogy
Can anyone recommend to me any other authors in this vein?? Thanx, Sam.

Hobbit recommended "The Chronicles of Ash" by Mary Gentle. It is a 4 book series. I finished it in a week! My husband devoured them in 3 days on vacation. Just couldn't put it down. If you get one, I suggest you get all because you won't want to waste the time going to the store to get the next one.

You got one book further than I did with SOT.
I would try John Marco's Tyrants and Kings trilogy, composed of
The Jackal of Nar
The Grand Design
The Saints of the Sword
If you liked Hobb's Liveships, try The Farseer Trilogy.
Lastly Matthew Stover
Heroes Die
Blade of Tyshalle
James Barclay

I concur with FitzFlagg on John Marco - an excellent recommendation.
If you like Barclay, you might also like some of David Gemmell's books. Waylander, Legend, and The King Beyond the Gate are a series and all very good reads. Having said that, most of Gemmell's are worth reading.
Enjoy.

I'm surprised noone mentioned George R.R. Martin's "Song of ice and fire yet". It's usually considered the best ongoing fantasy series by most people on this board.
It's dark gritty, full of surprising twists with great characters.
Three books out so far: "game of thrones",
"clash of kings" and "Storm of swords"
Besides that I can second the reccomendations for "Tyrants and kings" "Ash" and "The Farseer trilogy".
(Ash is 1 book only in one edition, for in the other (that includes the paperback editions))
I also want to add Guy Gavriel Kay to the list, His "Tigana" a stand alone is among my all time favorites on a level with Robin Hobb, second only to Martin.

Wow. I'm really pleased woith the response after less than 24 hrs!! I only discovered this website 3 days ago and i love it already.
I already read "Ash" (as the single volume)and i have to say that i thiought it was absolutely brilliant - EXCEPT for the end. It spoilt the book for me. The only David Gemmell i'v read is "winter warriors". Every character i liked dies! If someone could reasure me this isn't the case in the 'rigante' series i'll give him another try tho.
Any other recommendations?
