Hi there,
I have been reading Fiest's books ever since I have been reading fantasy and I love them to pieces. However, the recent books that he has released really don't come up to par when held up against his earlier works like "Magician". The "Magician" was a master peice and I read it time and time again, but these new books are soooo simple when compared to it. They have the one story line and plot and your lead around by the nose, I just find it so galling when I know that he can produce work of much higher quality.
What do you think?

I too think his first books where better. IMHO, the worst by Feist is the 1st in the Serpent Wars "Shadow of a Dark Queen" (I think). Imagine, that by reading this, I was discuraged reading the other three. Well, I finally read them, and they were very, very good --though not as good as his fist books.
But can all books from an author be great? I'd say, no. And I have a very high opinion of Feist.
BTW, someone said that he liked "A Rise of a Merchant Prince". I liked that too --very much! It was absolutely wonderfull!! It showed how life can be in a fantasy world, when the world is not on a major crisis.

I agree as well. Feist ist riding the Magician thema like a whore.
He is so overwellemd with the succes that he thinks , that he does us a favour by coming up with new stories underlying the first 2 or 3 books.
I just hope that he comes up with a new series all together.
Pug was good, but I know all about him, that I want to know.
Mr Feist , MOVE ON !!

yes he is definitely slacking off, Magician, darkness at sethanon and kings bucaneer were damn good reads. Then the serpent war series came out which was ok but not as good, then the Krondor books which were based on a computer game (I think) came out and they were abysmal, rubbish characters flat story line and not really interesting at all.
It would be good if he could come up with some new good detailed stories in Midkemia because it was an interesting world but it seems like hes milking the series (like Jordan) and publishing sub standard books knowing fans like us will still buy them in the hope that they will compare to his earlier work.

Yes I have to agree the Krondor books are by far the worst, and he does seem to be playing on the previous books and the Video game. There is so much scope for him in this world and he seems to be so narrow minded. Something that I have noticed recently is that he can finish a book off in about 10 pages (Bk4 Serpant War), everything is going badly and then Pug comes along and kicks everyones ass. Why can't he spread the heroism, we have hero's like Von Darkmoore who make the best of a bad situation, but Pug seems to be the only character to save the day. It is a total anticlimax the way everyone is in a desparate situation then along comes Pug and sorts everything out in about 10 minutes. I don't mind magic but a bit more grit and heroism from other characters would be great, as well as making for a better story.
Great stories, but could easily rival Jordan Tolkien if he tried.

I like Shadow of a Dark Queen, good book, i liked the mercenray groups elements.
Rise of A Merchant Prince was one of the most boring fantasy books i ever read though, economics is not what i'm looking for in fantasy.

No.
I love all his books.
He must be doing something right or he would never have sold so many and wrote so many books about the goings on of Midkemia.
Now Jordan is an author going backwards.
sorry I could not help myself. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Feist is my favorite author, but I too was greatly dissapointed with the Krodor series. The story lines were too linear and played out like a video game, as others had also pointed out.
The three books of the riftwar saga were awesome, and I really enjoyed the Serpentwar saga. I also loved the King's Buccaneer.
Hopefully his next series will be set after the Serpentwar and feature new complex strorylines and deeply developed characters like his earlier works. C'mon Ray, we all know you got it in ya!!

Definitely. This Riftwar Legacy stuff is crap. I was a little disappointed with Shards of a Broken Crown, but it still seemed like a proper book. The Krondor books so far read like stale novelisations of movies or something like that (The first one was an adaptation of a computer game- bad idea). IMHO Fiest would be best off doing something completely different, either a non Midkemia book or one with very few or none of the old characters, as to be perfectly honest I'm getting sick of most of them.

Hi all. I was thinking about reading books by Feist. Can someone tell me what the names os the actual "series" he has written are. I couldn't really tell by reading the posts in this topic. It appears that all of the series or books he has written is related to something with Riftwar. Also, from what I gather Magician is one of his best books. If I want to start reading Feist, is this the first book I should start out with? Any help, or link to a book order list would be great. Thanks a lot.
