I just finished the Science in the Capital series by Kim Stanley Robinson (Forty Signs of Rain, Fifty Degrees Below and Sixty Days and Counting).
While my personal views tend to be polar opposites of the authors on religion, global climate change and social issues and activities, his prose just walks all over me. It's pretty impressive to draw me in with a nostalgic writing style even though the themes of the book are fly far away from my radar.
I'm not an expert reviewer, but I wrote one over here (http://bookshelfreviews.blogspot.com/2008/01/sixty-days-and-counting-by-kim-stanley.html).
