Old Post.. Resurfaces.. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Military Fantasy, their is a old series by a author named Nancy Asire. The books are called Twilight Kingdoms, Tears of Time, and To fall like Stars.

Pretty good military fantasy.. Basically, two races at war, and the good guys are hopelessly outnumber. Unlike other books with a similiar theme, the good guys hardly pull off any super susprises, and save the day. They are constantly on the run..

Excellent Excellent books. Unfortunately, the books are Out-Of-Print, and the author seems to no longer publish. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/frown.gif

Chris Bunch wrote a series that is a fantasy version of Napoleon andhis campaigns. Only the setting is strictly swords and sorcery (no gunpowder or firearms). Pretty good reads. About the same level of enoyment as John Marco, imo.

Gemmell is a good read as well and Dave Duncan's The King's Blades offers some military action, though the majority of it is single person action.

Er is that the Seer, Demon and Warrior King books by bunch that you refer too? hrm those books have some sex in them http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/biggrin.gif. There the only fantasy books i've read that actually have fully described sex scenes.

Hi guys. I just finished Erickson's Memories of Ice (unbeleiveable book) and need to find something else to read. I am looking for something with a heavy military theme like GRRM and Ericsons books. Any suggestions? I was thinking of maybe readin the Black Company books. Any others out there? Thanks in advance guys!

Well there is the Fencer trilogy by K J Parker. Parker kinda has a odd writing technique but if you can get past that the books are full of Military tactics and stuff.

Book 1 is about Calvary tactics, seige warefare and swordplay. Book 2 is about archery vs infantry and bow making. Book 3 is all about armour. They are pretty good books but won't appeal to a lot of people.

His new book Shadow is well weird. I'm still not sure I understand whats going on in that book. Very odd http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif.

Feist/Wurts Empire series is a good one for battles and politics.

I recommend "Ash" by Mary Gentle. It's a very well written and unusual book and has an aproach to military themes which is even stronger than Erikson imo.

I would also recommend Ash - one of the best books I've read in over 30 years of reading SF/Fantasy. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Was also going to suggest the Glen Cook Black Company series, which Erikson is a big fan of.

I just read Chris Bunch's Seer King, and while not many other people really liked it, I enjoyed it. It goes into great detail about military strategies and tactics. Bunch's writing sometimes leaves something to be desired, but as a whole I really enjoyed his writing style. He makes me laugh. I've only read the first book of this series but I plan on reading the next two.
Fair Warning - there is quite a bit of sex in the book. Nothing you can't skip over if you prefer.
