Can anyone make good recommendations for Military Fantasy? (except GRRM - already read it)

How about Eliabeth Moon (Deed of Paksenarrion) ? And there is quite a number of David Drake / Eric Flint novels centred around a quasi-alternate history type of Byzantium, describing Belisarius' (Justinian's general) military campaigns.

There is the Black company series by Glen Cook, centering around a mercenary company, not one of the all time greats, but decent reading.

There is also the excellent Ash a secret history, by Mary Gentle

The Black Company and The Book of Ash are excellent military fantasy series.
Also, a lot of David Gemmel's books are military fantasy too, try Legend, excellent book.

Steven Erikson's 'The Malazan book of the Fallen' has a military theme - at least, the first book, 'The Gardens of The Moon' has - haven't read no 2 yet.

John Marco's books also have a very military feel to them - the first one, the Jackal of Nar starts off in the trenches! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

A Must is A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen. The action in this books is superb, some of the best I've read. And for Deadhouse Gates there's even more military action then the Gardens of the Moon, as you follow the chain of Dogs. The next one in the series comes out in september called Memories of Ice, which I can't wait for. If you liked GRRM, then I'm sure you'll love this series. Its got, Assassin's, Thief's, Mages, soldiers, Tiss Andii, Jaghut, Soletaken, etc. this world is complex, as is the sorry. And the history if very interesting also.

The Black Company by Glen Cook. Its about a mercenary group up for hire, who end up getting into loads of trouble.

Also, I haven't read them, but I hear that the "Warhammer Series" of novels and the novels by John Marco are considered under the "military fantasy" genre, and I've heard that they are excellent!

I can't recommend John Marco enough. I think he is the best of the new writers to emerge in the last couple of years. While there is a war and it does have a military backdrop, there is MUCH more to the story than military fantasy.

Review of T&K Book 3 Saints of the Sword (http://www.sffworld.com/authors/m/marco_john/sffreviews/saintsofthesword.html) Reviews of the previous volumes are linked on this page as well.

My interview with John Marco (http://www.sffworld.com/authors/m/marco_john/interviews/200104.html)

His books are available in USA, UK and other countries as well.

I can only agree with FitzFlagg, i'm close to the end of JoN, now, and it's great. The reason I didn't mention it is that it's not really military fantasy in my opinion, even if it's marketed as such, but then you did give GRRM as an example and i wouldn't call aSoIaF military fantasy either.

Barbarossa:

Each book in the series is better than the previous. Enjoy!
