I dont how it is elsewhere but here in England I wish they would put a tad more effort into these sections.

These two genre's are ubiquitous with multi book stories.
If you go into my local and city library you will find a fairly decent size fantasy section which is good except when you actually start to browse you will notice 4 entire book cases contain only 1 book(very rarely the first) of dozens of lengthy saga's.
You have to immedietly discount at least half the volumes there because they are part 2,3,4,5+ with no other books in the series.

It's not that certain volumes are loaned out, they just never pay attention to its serial nature when ordering and organising the genre.

I don't know how it work for you, but over here you can request a book and they usually manage to get it fast. They're more than happy to stock what's wanted, they just can't guess it if no one ask.

See if they can do interlibrary loans with the other libraries in your county. It's not as convenient, but if another library has a better organized sci-fi/fantasy section then you may be able to loan them from there.

I don't borrow anymore because I can't return on time. I've got libraries all over the country trying to hunt me down.

Don't rent movies anymore either.

Naughty :).

Im usualy late aswell but here you just get a trivial fine, like 80 pence for 1 week late.

Our libraries will order books in from others if you request, but its slow and you have to pay, albeit very little.
Point is simply walking into the library to get something then and there will likely end in frustration, unless you want to read the Wheel of Time Book 6 etc.

The library system we have here in Las Vegas (yes we have those, and schools and churches too:)) is pretty good. At least for stuff that is only about 5-10 years old. So they stay pretty current. But older stuff, especially if it only came out in paperback is a lot harder to find. I usually have to look through used bookstores for those. But they will order something if you ask. I asked them to order "The Blade Itself" when it got released here in the states and they had it not too long later.

Interlibrary loan takes care of that here. I haven't come across the first of any series that I can't get the rest of from another library. In this province the service is entirely free.

As far as not returning books on time goes, I have a few that are still due back at the junior high school I went to 12 years ago. Sometimes I consider returning them just to see how they'd react.

I live in Canada, my library has yet to fail me.

As well it shouldn't. Canada is the second best country on earth; right behind the People's Republic of Newfoundland and Labrador. :)

Here's a good question, why does the original poster's library end up with parts of series anyway? Who donates just book two of something? Did they not bother with book one themselves? Was book one so good they couldn't stand letting it go, but they thought book two was sub-par?

:) crazy newfies.

I think I will start donating my unwanted fantasy and sci fi to my library instead of the used book store.
