Ok, I finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman. (AMAZING!)

Anyways, what should I read next? Here are a few books in the running..

Jon Marco's Grand Design
China M. Perdido Station
Robin Hobb Ship of Destiny
David Farland Wizardborn
Simon Green Deathstalker War

Vote now. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

I like John Marco. Heck the man sent me a tee-shirt just for asking if anyone was familiar with his work on r.a.w.sf. (this back beforethe first book even came out).

But Marco has nothing on Hobb in my opinion.

Simon Green I found repetitive and a bit too formula bound.

Farland is something I only read when I have nothing else (last time was a 1,200 mile trek through the Far East -- it will not occur in the foreseeable future unless all the other books in my house spontaneously combust -- what a horrid thought!).
Oh and Farland needs the demons of completionism to be goading me with whip and flail.

Being the heretic that I am, I found Perdido tobe okay.

So, yes. Hobb is my vote.

And while I doubt that my opinion will prevail (I imagine all the Perdido fans will come crawling out of the gray space), be warned that if Hobb proves the day, I will be administering a test on the book to determine if our little experiment in democracy has been followed to a 't'!

(Perdido fan crawls out of grey space...)

Read China Mieville. This guys talent is scary...

Haven't yet read Marco, but intend to change that soon. I've never really warmed up to Hobb's style (something about her dialogue irks me). Too bad, because Robin Hobb is practically a neighbour of mine.

Out of that list, Perdido is probably top. Otherwise how else are you going to know what everyone else seems to be talking about round here? http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Liked the Simon Green as a light read.

I've still got Grand Design here to read - it may be my next, especially as I told John I would and John's a good guy - quite liked Jackal of Nar, and it's supposed to get better in the next. Didn't like David Farland - but I've only read the first. Robin Hobb is very good (and it might make sense to read before The Tawny Man, as I understand there are links..!)

In order then:
Perdido;
Grand design;
Ship of Destiny;
Deathstalker War;
Wizardborn.

But what do I know...

I'll answer the easiest for me--
I would avoid Green,

I would read The Grand Design by John Marco (only if you read Jackal of Nar), otherwise PSS by Mieville

Ship of Destiny by Hobb. Not only is it a goodread, I presume you hsave read the first two in the trilogy and so you might as well finish it.

I can't comment on the other though I did pick up a really cheap copy of Perdido Street Station the other day which I must get around to reading.

Ship of Destiny is very, very good. (plus with two v good sequls to look f'ward to if you like it!)

But i am still only half way into Perdido and i would say READ THIS FIRST. READ IT BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE! READ IT NOW!!!

This guy has a rare talent. This is the most original (and brilliantly written) novel i'v read in simply ages. And I read a LOT!

So, can you tell i like this?!

Sam
