Submission guidelines are not supposed to be confusing. Are they?
In the latest guidelines I got from an agent's website it says:
... Include a writing sample with your query (no more than fifty pages) and a one page synopsis...
Which sounds fine at first. But my question: How long is a page? Single or double spaced? Better yet, how many words(, more or less)?
I think it would be to my advantage to not look stupid when I submit a query.
Any advice or insite would be greatly apprecitated.

I assume this means traditional double spaced Times New Roman or Courier. I'd go with that if I were you.

Yep, double spaced, in a legible font at a decent size - 12pt, for example. Best not to worry about the amount of words, so long as the layout is okay. As someone who writes and works as an editor, all that's required is something clear and simple to read.

Mr.B., you know better by now. Standard formatting -- readable font, Courier, Verdana and Times New Roman being the most commonly used, but readable is the key, 12 point is fine, double-spaced pages with decent sized margins all around (1 inch about,) standard 8.5 by 11 inch paper, only justify the left margin, not the right margin, number your pages, don't staple the ms., and submit up to the end of the chapter that comes closest to the number fifty. If your chapter ends on page 51, make it 51 pages. If your chapter ends at page 55 or 60, however, don't send in that chapter, unless you think that the first part partial ms. of the chapter is very exciting, in which case, go up to 50 pages. They don't care how many words are on a page as long as you aren't trying to cram 400 words on one sheet. They're not going to be counting them yet.
I think that Mark would agree that they are less interested in how pretty you make your submission than they are in reading the text. So do the basics and you're fine.

Of course I do. Just last minute jitters. I have a good story, it's time to roll the dice.
