Have you ever noticed that every time someone asks for a recomendation, especially when the person just starts to become familiar with fantasy genre; all the same names always come up. I wonder who in your opinion is the author other people reccomend the most?

I have no empirical evidence to support this, but I think George R.R. Martin is probably the most recommended author around here. He seems to be "the man" in the fantasy genre these days.

Only because the people who use this forum the most are gits http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif.

I would say tolkien would be the most recommended.

Yes, Caldazar, you're right.
Tolkien would be the first author i'd recomend to anyone who has run out of toilet paper.

Well, if you wanna go with the results of all the "Do you like <insert author name here> ?" polls that were doing the rounds recently, then i think Martin was the ONLY one that didn't get a single 'no'?

Well the two authors I always recommend the most is:
- Steven Erikson
- George R R Martin

These two authors are on a plane of there own at the moment, both have a massive cast of characters, not afraid to kill any characters off, a complex story and plots, plenty of twists, A-rating world building, and they don't bother using Elfs and Dwarfs, instead create there own creatures, especially Erikson. And I can't wait till Memories of Ice and A Feast for Crows is out.

As to Tolkien most people have normally read him before coming here, so I normally leave him out of my recommending.

George RR Martin seems to be the most widely recommended author around. In recent times, China Mieville's Perdido Street Station has also been strongly recommended.

There is also strong support for Donaldson, and (so that I don't anger e-Morgana http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif) Sara Douglass.

Come on Shehzad - who are you trying to kid. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif I think the number of Sara Douglass recommendations could be counted on two hands (actually one would probably do). I don't think she quite rates up there with Georgie recommendations ....... yet. That's only because there's a lot of people(probably most people here actually) who haven't read her yet (not mentioning any names dennizm).

Surely GRRM would have to win hands down. Closely followed by China Meilville, and Matthew Woodring Stover who seem to pop up everywhere I look lately.
