Out of competiton: J.R.R. Tolkien
(not meaning he's so good that he can't be compared, but that he has a special meaning that makes it impossible to me to compare him with others.)
1) George R.R. Martin: Song of ice and fire
2) Robin Hobb: Farseer & Lifeship traders
3) Guy Gavriel Kay: Tigana, Song for Arbonne ect. (switches places with Hobb depending on mood)
4) Terry Pratchett: Discworld, Good Omens ect. (whenever i'm depressive he will save me)
5) used to be Katherine Kerr's Deverry until recently, I think I settle for Mary Gentle: Ash, Grunts now
6) Katherine Kerr: Deverry series (see 5)
Runner ups: John Marco: Tyrants and Kings, I will wait for book three till I decide if he gets slot 6
Stephen Brust: Vlad Taltos novels
C.J. Cherryh: Fortess series
Stephen Donaldson: Mordant's need more than Covenant, I like his Sf stuff best.
Phillip Pullman: Dark materials (still waiting for book three
Promising stuff on the to read list:
Perdido street station
(If it's as good as people say there will be more reshuffles of the list soon)
Books to avoid (Books i would have thrown away after reading, had I been unlucky enough to own them: R.A. Salvatore "Icewind Dale", Brooks "sword of Shanarra"
Plenty of other books on my shelves but eithet not good or bad enough to mention (Including Feist *ducks Allanon's missiles)

With my newfound maturity, I shall respond to those provoking me by running down Tolkien... http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif
Well, I don't know if these are in any particular order, but hey, here goes...
Tolkien
Donaldson
Mieville (just one so far, but looking good...)
Martin
Williams
Feist (early stuff)
neologik: I read a Michael Swanwick short story once, and it was pretty good- what's his best stuff? If I remember correctly the story was called "Cold Iron" or something like that.

1. David Gemmell
2. Terry Pratchett
3. JRR Tolkien
4. James Barclay
5. John Marco
6. Raymond Feist (early work)
There are plenty bubbling under - Martin, I've only read one so far so it's too early to judge, Joyce, likewise. Also Moorcock.
People very unlikely to appear are Brooks and Jordan but all things are possible...
