I'm pretty excited because I finally found two out of print Fantasy Classics in a used bookstore on a business trip.

The Worm Ouroboros by ER Eddison
The Broken Sword by Poul Anderson.

I've been trying to track both of these books down for a while and was happy to find them both in the same store.

Another Fantasy Classics I've been trying to track down is MJ Harrison's Viriconium books.

Any Fantasy Classics people here are looking for or have read lately? (Tolkien excluded, I'm referring pretty much to anything pre- late 1970s)

I bought some long-overdue-to-have-been-read books at the Worldcon. Including Worm Ourobouros as well as Richard Ford's Quest for Faradawn, some Talbot Mundy, Ewangeline Walton et al.
I'm not ready to dive into them yet however. Well, maybe the Worm, which looks grand and difficult, but it is such a Classic. I'm more or less collecting those that I'm missing. I did quite some reading few months back at home in Finland, before coming to US, for I wrote an article on Fantasy without Tolkien - "Let's pretend that there never was LoTR" to a SF-zine.

It was a tough job. There's so much that's pretty much forgotten and neglected as also incredible amount of out-dated classic's that didn't stand the test of Time. Like Seabury O'Quinn - dreadfully boring, yet SO popular at his time. Times change, I have friends, wise and learned with insight and interesting opinions who can't stand Lord Dunsany or William Morris, not to mention something as indispensable as James Branch Cabell. Which are all author's I love.
The Shadow of Tolkien (as noted at couple of threads here already) is immense, far bigger than most actually realise. But there is a big secret out there, the Other Stuff.
I'm looking forward for this thread!

I am ging to stick with ER Eddison... I have been tryin for ages to get hold of A Fish Dinner In Memison(sp?).

I think this book is part the 'Oroborus' tale, there is another book, but I cannot remember the title... I know who can help!!

HOBBIT! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/biggrin.gif, I need you brother!!

I think, and this is a guess from left field, Dennis, but the ER Eddison books you mention may be part of Zimavia(sp?) which are being re-issued by Orion Fantasy Masterworks in the UK.

Dunsany is great, well at least The King of Elfland's Daughter which is all I've read by him.

I've also, when in the rare/used bookstores and I remember, been trying to track down some James Branch Cabell and Clark Ashton Smith, but there aren't as many rare/used bookstores in my area as I would like.

All the old time classics are published in omnibus editions by "Fantasy Masterworks". I couldn't find them, and now I easily can.
Gene Wolfe, Robert E. Howard, Jack Vance, and more.

Well,tell me about "Broken Sword".
Leonard Carpenter, one very good "Conan"-author who is my friend told me that it is really great.

Haven't yet read The Broken Sword but others here have said great things about the book when Anderson died. Since then, I've been trying to find a copy.

I'll post back here when I finish it, the "to read" pile is pretty high right now.

Do you know from where is Leonard Carpenter? Are you absolutely sure that he's from USA?
There is one Leonard Carpenter which I know! And he's BULGARIAN! Yes, if that's the one you are speaking of! I know him personally and he's BULGARIAN!

Nonsense, no-one famous is Bulgarian.
(j/k http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif)

A lot of fantasy classics (Lord Dunsany etc etc) have recently become available all o'er the place in England - I think this may be the Fantasy Masterworks people thing that Bardos has mentioned. I got Zelazny's 'Chronicles of Amber' and Gene Wolfe's 'Shadow and Claw' from this 'series' recently. Which is a Good Thing..!
