Blindsight by Peter Watts

http://www.amazon.com/Blindsight-Peter-Watts/dp/0765319640/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1207781214&sr=1-1

Pretty much every type of consciousness is in the book, which is essentially, about consciousness.

Peter Watts is one of the greatest Science Fiction Authors of this century. Another one of the great authors of Sci-fi along with people like Alastair Reynolds, Neal Asher, Richard Morgan, Iaian Banks. Peter Watts (a Canadian) distinguishing attribute, aside from being one of the few non-brits to write good scifi nowadays, is that his focus is a bit more about the hardlined science.

One of the better things about Blindsight was that he listed many books he got his information about Consciousness from, one of these books is a personal favorite called

The User Illusion : Cutting Consciousness Down to Size.

If you are looking for some source material for writing sci-fi involving advances in Ai consciousness or transhumanism etc etc, anything related to consciousness in any way shape or form. Then it's a book well worth reading.

It might not quite what you are looking for, in that this book concerns a collective mind spread over several bodies, but it's a bloody good book - so I'm going to recommend it anyway:

More than Human by Theodore Sturgeon

EDIT: Which I just noticed ArthurFrayn mentioned in his linked review.

and which I'll second or third the motion. MTH is on my constantly re-read list and, if you haven't discovered Sturgeon yet, this will (hopefully) get you into him.
