Two novels which I looked forward to for a long time: "Onion Girl" and "Black House" were deeply disappointing.
"Black House" was a good horror novel, but it had little to do with amazing "Talisman".
Which books do you consider disappointments? (They might be good books, just not what you expected)

The Redemption of Althalus by Eddings. After Iīve read all the other books by him I expected something far better or at least something quite different. Havenīt even managed to finish the book, yet.

I would have to say Perdido Street Station.
Nowhere near any of the fuss many have given it. Rather boring and slow. Many of the situations seemed either forced or a little too fortuitous.
But that is why there is vanilla and why there is chocolate.

JohnH... I am really glad you said it first, but PSS bored the heck out of me. To be fair it may have been all the hype on the forum, but it was a big let down for me as well...

I'd have to agree with The Redemption of Althalus - yawn and sigh... I did (at the time) expect better from Eddings. I try not to let it crush my fond memories of reading his early series.

The lord of the rings was my ultimate disappointment. You see and here about it everywhere. Every fantasy epic is compared to it. With all of the praise, I expected to love it. I was sorely disappointed. I found it slow and chocked full of characters that didn't appeal to me. It did have it's good points, but not enough for me to enjoy it.

Well, I wouldn't really consider it highly anticipated except by the absolute diehard fans, but I recently gave A WINTER'S HEART a try. I had heard that it was an improvement over PATH OF DAGGERS. As it turned out, I couldn't even get through the 80+ page prologue. This particular prologue may have been the most tedious reading I can ever remember. I've heard it mentioned that the ending of A WINTER'S HEART is actually exciting and eventful. Too bad I couldn't get that far....
