I thought Silverthorn by Raymond E Feist was a terrible, terrible book.
I don't know what's going on, because I really liked Magician. But for some reason Silverthorn just gave me the urge to read in the toilet.
Is my opinion unusual or are there others who also feel the same way?

Admittedly, they were a step down after Magician, but I still thought that Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon were good books - better than some of the Pug ex machinas that followed. Feist is a very talented writer, but he seemed to get casual as his books started selling.

Yep, Shehzad.
Though, I personaly liked Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon more than Magician. But, yeah, the following books are spoiled by that god ex mechana thing... and that's a damn shame, for they are pretty good books with great characters, apart from that (minor/major?) flaw.

the Pug ex Machinas--that's a MAJOR flaw in otherwise very readable books.

Prince of the Blood and The King's Buccaneer were extremely average books. However, though initially the Serpentwar Saga seemed a welcome return to form, it eventually degenerated into another Pug-saves-the day. Its a real shame, as Bardos said, becuase that series had so much potential.

I suppose that as an English major I should be more critical of the things I read, but I'm not when I read for fun. I really liked Silverthorn and the rest of the Riftwar Saga books. I think that I overlooked some of problems you are complaining about because I liked the characters so much, especially Jimmy. I do agree though that prince of the blood and the king's buccaneer wheren't as high quality as the riftwar saga, although I still found them highly entertaining. If you didn't think Silverthorn was as good as Magician, is Darkness at Sethanon also of a lower quality then Magican?

Well, I've previously stated that Magician is one of my favourite books of all time. I expected the remaining books to be of the same high quality. naturally I was a bit disappointed. They were certainly good books, but they didn't make my list.

I also read Silverthorn in the smallest room of my house, which turned out to be quite appropriate the more pages I turned.

Silverthorn was the first book I read after Perdido Street Station, so perhaps that could be a factor.
After reading Perdido anything immediately afterwards probably seems to lack something.
