Ok, this isn't really a list of best fantasy authors of all time because I think it's impossible to make that kind of judgement, but here's a list of ten GREAT authors:

China Mieville
Gene Wolf
Michael Moorcock
Terry Pratchett
Hope Mirrlees
Ursula Le'Guin
Fritz Leiber
J.R.R. Tolkien
Mary Gentle
Roger Zelazny

Many of these have published work in other "genres" (I hate that term!) and I recommend that you try to track down that stuff too.

That's great that there are so many great fantasy authors out there, but can't you all at least agree on some people, not just Tolkien?

Dominus...

If Tolkien is in a members top 5, they have every right to say so. This post is asking what each individual member considers the best 5 authors... if you don't like Tolkien, leave him out of your list http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif But a lot of poeple do like Tolkien, and the Tolkien haters will have to live with that http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif.

1. TOLKIEN!!!
2. Donaldson
3. Straub/King (in collaboration)
4. Tad Williams
5. Hobb

No, that's not what I meant, I LOVE Tolkien, he's the best, I was just hoping people would come to a more definite consensus on the great authors, believe me, Tolkien is in my top 5, definintely.
