Which authors are? Which authors are able to to create some excellently characterized characters, truly memorable ones.
I'm not talking about other ingredients of a good tale. Just about characters that really stay with you, for some reason (feel free to elucidate on that btw, as long as its not too spoilerish). They also need not necessarily be favorites of yours (perhaps you dislike some of their character traits), but simply ones you thought were excellently drawn. I'm especially fond of tragic characters.

Well I would have to say David Gemmell. I don't know if you have read LEGEND but there are some brilliant characters in that. And MORNINGSTAR is simply wonderful - very tragic! Read it and weep...
I just read REVELATION by Carol Berg. The characterisation in that is excellent. The hero is a slave and the author does an amazing account of his changing relationship with his "master", Prince Alexander. I don't want to give too much away...but it was a book I couldn't put down.
Nothing like a really good, twisted villain either...

Robert Joran's Wheel Of Time characters are really cool and seem so real, though some people are pissed off with a few of them.
Considering that Raymond E. Feist's books are fairly short, you really get a sense of his characters and they are all really good. Not all of his characters are likeable, but they are just the perfect characters for teh books, like Tolkien's characters.

I'll remember Sparhawk and Kalten from "Ellenium/Tamuli" forever.

One who is not easily forgotten is Raistlin from DL, and a few others from the same books, like Tass and Fizban (sp).

I couldn't disagree more. I felt that these characters were 2 dimensional and unrealistic. When did we ever really understand their motivations? When did we ever understand why they did anything?

Brandin and Dianora from GG Kay's Tigana were memorable characters for me. Still one of the few books that make me sob like a big girl's blouse! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif
