It is a fantasy novel. Basic plot is there is some political stirring between the humans and the animal humanoids that were created using old magic. The animal humanoids were servants of the humans. The dogs were servants, bulls used for manual labor, etc.
The main character was a boy that had an eidetic (photographic) memory and eventually became a dragon rider, and recruited his friends, both human and animal humanoid alike, to become dragon riders and stop the pending war between the humans and animals.
