I am nervous because I find myself agreeing with Caldazar's wtf about the asian, black etc.

Personally, I don't think i like the idea of dividing the world into American and non-American. 'WTF???' to THAT!

Sammie ("non-american")

If we're going to be so PC, let's include areas like 'Best Visually-impaired author', 'Best Rather-Ugly-But-Has-A-Really-Good-Personality Author' and so on. Let's get real, people - shouldn't categories be based on subdivisions within the genre rather than subdivisions within humanity?!?! I don't even believe we need a male/female divide in this one.

Rather-Ugly-But-Has-A-Really-Good-Personality Author = Stephen King... even uglier than me, but he can write!

FWIIW... I find I agree with most of you, I never worry to much about the ethnic background, or nationality of authors... or any human being for that matter.

But I suspect JBC meant this in good faith, and he was not out to offend.

I agree, I am sure that this post was meant in good faith.

Best Male Author - Neil Gaiman
Best Female Author - Robin Hobb

Half the time I wouldn't know the race/nationality/shoe size whatever of an author. Why read about the author when you can read the book?

How do you know any of the info in the bio is true any way? Your vote for best female author may be going to an 80 year old guy writing under a pseudonym.

This topic is really just a continuation of the old "Rulez/Droolz" problem, except with a few more categories.

Dennizm, that's exactly who I had in mind when I thought up that category. King sure won't make the covers of magazines based on his looks!

Im in the same boat as eventine. I don't know a damn thing about most of the authors I read (even more so because i cant aford hardbacks. Paper backs rarely have author pics or extensive bios). And in the end, i'd really rather not know. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of these authors are self-absorbed assholes http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif.
