Looking for a fading main character?

Hey everyone!
We have a patron looking for a book that was published before '98 that takes
place on another planet. One of the first scenes takes place in a bar where he is talking with a woman then she suddenly stops talking. The character finally figures out that he has faded or disappeard from sight.

We know it is NOT Fade by Robert Cormier

Sounds a lot like "A Gift From Earth" by Larry Niven.

Part of the "Known Space" sedries albeit an earlier set on this was one of my favourites as a kid. Raises a lot of social and cultural ideas too. Well worth reading.
